تعاني الأبقار الحلوب من درجة معينة من الالتهاب الجهازي حول الولادة، ولكن يبدو أن الالتهاب المفرط أو غير المنظم يلعب دورًا في المرض الالتهابي. نظرًا لأن تنشيط الجهاز المناعي يقلل من الكالسيوم في الدم، فإن توافر الكالسيوم بكثرة خارج الخلية قد يعزز الالتهاب أو يحافظ عليه، وقد يكون نقص كلس الدم استجابة تكيفية للالتهاب. في هذه الدراسة تم دراسة الدور المحتمل لمكملات الكالسيوم في الالتهاب الجهازي بعد الولادة في الأبقار الحلوب متعددة الولادات. لم تظهر نتائج هذه الدراسة دليلاً على وجود تفاقم كبير للالتهاب الجهازي عن طريق إعطاء مكملات الكالسيوم عن طريق الفم للأبقار متعددة الولادات التي تتمتع بصحة جيدة سريريًا - يوصى بإجراء تقييم قائم على الأدلة لمكملات الكالسيوم.
